The City Council has approved plans for the relocation of three libraries in the city to save money.
Coventry City Council approved plans to move the services in Bell Green, Coundon and Holbrooks at a meeting held earlier in April 2025.
The cabinet member for finance, councillor Richard Brown, said the relocation would save £625,000 per year.
He added that the change was part of a wider council plan that aimed to prevent services from being shut down by bringing them closer together.
“I believe that through this extensive consultation process we have found the best way to keep our libraries open, give better joined-up access to more services and save the taxpayer some money,” Brown said.
As well as changes to the venue, there will also be changes to the library opening times with two of the services closing earlier and one that will not open at weekends.
Bell Green Library, which was a purpose-built library in the Riley Square shopping centre, will be moving to the Park Edge Family Hub in Roseberry Avenue.
Holbrooks library currently occupies a former toilet block now run by the Holbrooks Community Care Association in Holbrooks Park. It will move to the Dementia Partnership Hub in Everdon Road.
Coundon Library, which has been at its current site for over 75 years, is set to relocate into the Coundon Family Centre, saving an estimated £45,000 per year.
Research by the Stoke Local History Group reveals that Coundon Library was originally known as Radford Library and first opened at Moseley Avenue in October 1949. It was formerly based in the school hall of Barkers’ Butts Girls’ School, where it first opened in 1931. The current library was renamed Coundon in 1976, to avoid confusion with Jubilee Cresent Library in Radford.
The changes are expected later this year and will be reviewed in six months.
