Drapers' Hall

This wonderful hidden gem is in Bayley Lane opposite the Council House and close to the old Cathedral ruin and Cathedral Square. The building was the headquarters of the Drapers' Company and was erected in 1831-32 in the Greek Revival style.

This wondeful Regency building is full of interesting and beautiful features. The undercrofts contain cellars and wonderful Victorian kitchens. There is a lovely ballroom with orchestra balcony and mirrored walls. There are some stunning ceiling lights. Unusually the building was constructed without windows and gets all its light from roof windows. It also has unusual arrangements for ventilation. Unfortunately the building had deteriorated and parts of it had become unsafe.

This Grade II* Listed regency building is truly exceptional. Not only is it a remarkable survivor of both the war time bombing and post war redevelopment, but also due to diligent maintenance, it remains intact and almost unaltered from its Victorian heyday – a time capsule to the past.

The building is now under the control of the Historic Coventry Trust and is being restored in partnership with the Prince's Foundation.

This will conserve the historic building but also create a new outward facing extension that turns the building around and opens it up, providing welcoming easy access onto the public open space via a new-build atrium. The new-build extension also provides the capability to service the historic building to modern standards with a lift, sufficient toilets without compromising the historic fabric. Historic Coventry are working in partnership with The Princes Foundation and Coventry Music Service to restore this beautiful building which will be open in time for UK City of Culture 2021.T

The Conventry Society considers that this building is no longer "at risk".
